Operations by Bruxelles-Propreté

The following Bruxelles-Propreté operations concern regional roads only. However, there are occasions where some local roads are also worked on by Bruxelles-Propreté, at the request of municipalities.

CLEANING

Our teams are responsible for the daily cleaning of:

• Regional, supra-municipal and municipal roads under contract (426 km)
  • During the week: from 5:00am to 8:00pm
  • During the week-end: from 6:30am to 8:00pm
• Some markets, often large ones, like the Midi market, the Place Reine Astrid, the Place Flagey, etc.
• Around major train stations in the region
• STIB's own sites on regional roads

EMPTYING AND REPAIRING BINS

Bruxelles-Propreté teams are responsible for emptying more than 4,700 litter bins on regional roads. The frequency for emptying the bins depends on the rate of filling of the bins.

However, it is also up to members of the public to make good use of the bins:

• They are intended to take litter produced while you are out and about
• They are not intended for your household waste
• They are not intended for commercial waste
• Do not place anything by the bins, even if they are full.

The Bruxelles-Propreté teams are also responsible for repairing or replacing certain models of defective litter bins in support of Bruxelles Mobilité.

COLLECTING FLY-TIPPING

Fly-tipping is a real nuisance for communities. It is the most widespread form of anti-social behaviour, and the one that the public considers most objectionable. We can tackle this problem together.

There are several kinds of fly-tipping:

• Rubbish bags put out outside of the days and hours to put out the rubbish bags.
• Bulky waste and construction/renovation waste
• Boxes, plastic bags and other waste left outside
• Etc.

In other words, fly-tipping consists of getting rid of waste without complying with the regulatory provisions.
Each year, several personnel members are assigned exclusively to dealing with this problem; they collect more than 3,000 tons of fly-tipped waste.

Fly-tipping is subject to large fines

CLEANING AND REPAIRING GULLIES

The manual cleaning of more than 15,000 gullies on regional roads is carried out regularly to prevent them from becoming blocked up and overflowing in the event of heavy rains.

This cleaning is occasionally followed by deep cleaning using machinery.

MAINTENANCE OF PAVEMENTS AND BUILDING ACCOTEMENTS

Pavements and areas around buildings (whether inhabited or not) must be maintained and kept clean. This is the responsibility of:

• the occupant of the part of the building fronting onto the street at ground-floor level, unless otherwise agreed between the landlord and tenants
• if the ground floor is not inhabited, the occupants of the upper floors in ascending order
• if the building is completely empty, the owner. 

Bruxelles-Propreté also puts its know-how at the disposal of other regional institutions such as STIB, Bruxelles-Mobilité, etc.
